Streamlined Depth-Area-Duration Analyses
MSI has recently upgraded their StormView software to produce severe storm output data needed by hydrologists to quantify runoff and precipitation rates associated with controlling storm events. This new version of the StormView software uses high definition NEXRAD digital data and surface precipitation to calculate the magnitude and spatial coverage of a precipitation event. For more information of the StormView program visit the StormView page. Accompanying software modules produce storm depth-area-duration tables and basin specific average precipitation depth.
NEXRAD Radar Generated Rainfall Estimates - Background
- Historically storm precipitation estimates have been produced with rain gauge measurements.
- Gauge data are very susceptible to error and typically have poor horizontal resolution.
- New high definition NEXRAD radar data are now available and offer an accurate alternative to gauge data.
- Quality precipitation gauge data are used to calibrate the NEXRAD radar data to produce gridded precipitation data.
- High resolution gridded precipitation data consist of 400 meter horizontal and five minute temporal resolution.
- Radar data are available for continental USA from 1995 through current.
- MSI software uses convective, tropical, and Marshall Palmer dBZ to precipitation relationships.
- MSI software allows for the use of a manual dBZ to precipitation and “best-fit” relationship which is derived using high quality gauge data to calibrate the dBZ to precipitation relationship.
